Summer Summer Summer

Then I had a Howard Zinn week which is still sorta going on. A People's History of the United States came in the mail a couple days ago and I will read through it soon. So far, the most interesting thing I have read from him has been about freedom schools, which were schools set up around the south during the Civil Rights movement. These schools were established with teachers who had little or no experience, but they made up for it with a passion for knowledge. Teaching students in freedom schools was dangerous at times. Pretty interesting stuff...
Started to learn the piano about a week ago. So far I have only got a couple Tom Waits songs down and several chords. I guess the keyboard is good to know though.
Reading a bunch has made me realize how unimportant some thing are that are going on in my life. This sprouts from recognizing things on a global scale. It's not really important what somebody says in passing or how a certain person acts. There are way more fucked up things going on in the world. I can't think of anything that wastes more time than complaining about the superfluous little misunderstandings that go on in a niche.
In a couple of weeks I will move into a new place. Bigger and more expensive, but worth it. Moving will be a bitch. Time to move out of a small place in Mountain Brook and into a large place by St. Vincent's. I can't wait.
Cardinals vs. Braves in two weeks!

music: "Celebrated Summer"
Highlight of the first day:
Fy Fan - Probably the most energetic show of the first night. Every member of their band had an unparalleled amount of energy. The facial expressions of the bassist were enough alone. It was great to finally see a no bullshit hardcore band from Sweden.
World Burns to Death - Not at frightening as I expected live but still brought the D-beat. Their new stuff sounds great and they even played songs from the first album. Probably the most brutal band to play Chaos. I got a shirt afterward. Then on the drive home noticed that I had purchased the most vulgar thing I have ever laid my eyes on. Maybe I will wear it in public one day.
Hard Skin - Was just funny.
Second Day:
Leatherface - Didn't play quite as long as I had expected. Frankie seemed to get pissed halfway through the set and didn't sing all the songs to "Dead Industrial Atmosphere." He seemed pretty upset and they didn't deliver an encore even though the crowd resorted to soccer chants. Still, despite this, it was worth the drive to see them and I doubt I will ever get to see Leatherface again.
Iron Lung - Played an incredible set. They had a bassist for this show who was the fastest bassist I have seen in a while. Also, some nice stage presence between songs. I wasn't quite as fond as Hatred Surge afterwards, but they were still pretty good.
Third Day:
Invasion - From Spain, and probably the best band I had known nothing about. They had a nice echo effect to their vocals which was kind not the best sound at first but then grew on me alot. They spoke in Spanish throughout the set. This seemed to be the theme of the third day. There were a few bands who were from Spanish speaking countries.
Inmates - Frontman was kind of a dick. Called the audience pussies and asked them to slap the person next to them. Not too down with these statements.
Los Crudos - Holy shit. I have never seen a show this insane. Everybody knew the words, despite the fact they were in Spanish. Stage dives galore that never got old. Martin is an incredible frontman and an amazing person. They played the show to benefit a Hispanic youth group in Austin. Between songs he spoke to the audience in English and then promptly translated the words into Spanish. The energy was set from the opening lines of "Tiempos De La Miseria," when everybody joined in on the opening words -- Nosotros no somos dueƱos de nada. This set revitalized my enthusiasm for punk and I was glad to be apart of it.
Tragedy and Crude were also great.
Walker said it best, the vocalist for the New Bomb Turks is a young Iggy Pop. Made it just in time to see the Turks after Crudos. Limpwrist played a show at a warehouse afterwards but we couldn't find it, or the show already ended after the Turks.
Austin, TX. is crazy, and could be considered a country in and of itself.
I hope the best for everyone.

Horray for things! And my kids got me a cookie cake at the school I was teaching at on my last day there. What nice young dudes. I put the card they made me on the wall behind my computer as a constant reminder. Somehow...I have managed to eat for free just about each meal for the past week. Pretty amazing work I must say; I am not quite sure how exactly it happened either. On Thursday the news staff gets free Cosmos pizza. Hope they will let me put a couple beers on the tab. On Friday Bo leaves to New York for ten days leaving me the place to myself. Who knows what crazy shenanigans I will get into.
So yea, after Monday I will be smooth sailing through the summer.
Being in a dub band would be so inncredible.

music: Leatherface
I feel surprisingly good today, something which happens often when I have to wake up exceptionally early. Got to school and had a Hilltop meeting. I am so grateful for the free ticket I got to Muse of Fire this weekend after interviewing the folks.
Although several months away, I think I will cover Dylan Thomas for my senior thesis. The sole reason will be for the presentation. Instead of merely "presenting" my thesis, I will have some papers move, in slideshow fashion, across the projector with the important facts written on them. Instead of boring people with a paper, I will drink and ramble out some lines, just as Thomas would have intended.
On another note, Chaos in Tejas tickets have been purchased. If anybody were to ask me, for the past two year, what active band I would want to see, the answer would without a doubt be Leatherface. I have listened to them everyday for some time now. I cannot wait till the night of May 16th. Only a few weeks away. The above line is taken from a Leatherface song. I always thought the delivery of this line was incredible, never thought this was what Frankie was saying though.
I will never understand why some people choose to dress up all business like for school. As in, matching pants and jacket with accompanying tie. Whats that all about? Come on guys, we're young.
I wonder if people would be down for a comics page in the paper.
I am so all over the place today.

Sometimes when I feel down I think the best way to combat certain feelings is just to turn off my phone and place myself in a vacuum for however long it takes. Thats what I did today. Did it help? Sure! I would like to talk about more personal things with more people but don't really feel that livejournal is that right outlet for it.
This is my hell week and I am not really too worried about it.
Tomorrow I get to go teach children. Yeah!

I think today will be a good food day. I am going to get some delicious treats at the store and make smoothies and maybe eggplant parmisian for dinner tonight. I am so excited about cooking something good tonight instead of the cheap spaghetti I am used to!
I am the new Arts and Entertainment editor at Birmingham-Southern which means I decide what we discuss in the paper. All articles in that section are written by, or are run by, me before they are printed. Hopefully I can introduce the school to some different music besides the Indie/alt pace it has been going at for the past few years. I am glad I will have an outlet for my writing as well, usually it becomes pretty decent when I have something to write about.
I am going to buy my Chaos in Tejas tickets in just a few days! Also, a trip to New York is in the works which will be funded by the tubular (yes, tubular) tax refund I will be getting in a couple months.
Oh yea, the kittens opened their eyes today long enough for me to see them before the mom came meowing in my direction, asking me to move my no good human self away from her offspring.

"Is there a flag that flies above your heart and is my name writ there upon it."
I am going to try to get this thing out of me that has been bothering me for the past eight years. Sometimes it is good to forget about things. I have said this many times before and it is so hard to do. I think I just need to do it and forget about saving face. I would like to give my brain a rest and just not worry about anything and take things as they come.

The cats are fun, but they like to shit in random places and dump over the trash can
The next Judy Garland show (should) will be solely Van Halen covers
I am counting down the days until Chaos in Tejas which coincides with when school ends

So in an attempt to liven up the apartment we got a cat. His name is Dude. So far so good. Apparently he may spray but so far no signs of that. He meows alot and I always think he is irritated or pissed or something. I think he just want attention though. Soon he will get settled in and I won't have to say "no Dude," or "hey, Dude... Dude!" anymore. He keeps trying to eat this plant though which I have a suspicion could potentially be poisonous. It has been moved. This morning he was skiddish around me and now he follows me everywhere. Dude is pretty cool so far.
I wish I had a bigger tube amp and a guitar without locking strings. These locking strings won't let me do anything but standard tuning. At least I can throw down on some standard tuning though.

music: Stop It!!
I think about everything too much. And when I have finally debated all the options a decision has already been made. Sometimes people will still be waiting on me and sometimes they will be so far gone that I can't even see them anymore.
I missed the whole night. Fell asleep at seven, woke up at eleven. My roommate didn't want to go to Stars, lame. He started playing WOW. (oh no). Next week will be different though.
So begins my poor month. In an attempt to get enough cash by spring break to fly to Olympia I will have to save at least $400 by the end of the month. It seems impossible, but my stinginess runs deeper than the Mariana's trench. I may sell some records soon too if anybody is down for some cheap stuff. I don't have many other things that are sellable.
My friend William is the most quotable person I know. I should keep track of his more memorable ones. Tonight we were having a convo about vomming and trying to decide if half a cup is considered a reasonable upchuck. I considered it to be more of big spit than anything else. According to Bill, it was "total ralph." Beautiful.

Paris!
Jan. 21st, 2008 | 06:51 am
Despite popular belief, this city is kinda dirty. London is great too, there's so much to do. I have learned enough French to order things, say a few words, and tell people I don't speak French. Tomorrow is a free day which may mean we go to Versailles. Hot air ballooning is closed for the winter so we are going ice skating instead. Yea Parisians! I really wish I knew French fluantly though.
London highlights include Pasties, a pretty great show, and stupid Soho birthday party.
Hope all is well back home. Three more days.

music: Grand Funk Railroad
and this is the sound that trees make
when the sap spreads through the limbs.
Twigs give when the wind is brisk,
here they shiver with shadows
that lace the ground below
where boys graze along the rigid
groove of the pine bark,
breaking parts in handfulls,
dropping them to where the roots undo.
A trunk holds until the arms split and fall
and men collect them in handfulls to burn,
giving the ashes room to breathe again.
Today I ate at Cici's pizza. I'm not proud of it. It sounded like a good idea for about five minutes and really it was a passive aggressive choice because where we really wanted to eat had closed and was for lease. Their pizza is so bad...not just a myth. There was a buffalo chicken pizza with sauce that was neon orange. My favorite was the salad pizza. Favorite because of innovation, i'm sure it tasted aweful. Basically it was a pizza with lettuce, carrots, cheese, and marinara sauce as a dressing for toppings. I took a picture. How could I pass that up.
I also saw a pretty disgruntled looking kid taking a piss while facing the road and shaking around on my way home today. Just right out in front of everybody and all of the many cars which were passing by. I guess he was pretty upset about something.
I leave in three days. Maybe I will stay in Europe.

The apartment across the complex played the same reggae beat from about 3:30 to 5:30 last night. It was about a ten second sample that just looped for that long. I really think some dude passed out while his player began to skip. Jerk.
I wish it were January 9th.

Sometimes when I am in a public place and I get really anxious I will pull out my phone and see if anybody texted me. If not, I will just text some random person. Usually the text will just be random words to get a response. I really need to stop doing this. I know why I do it, and it just keeps me from talking to people around me.
It happens every year, I don't get motivated when exams come and I get too relaxed with the days I have to study before the actual test. However, for one exam I have to make a mock syllabus which is pretty cool because I get to decide what is important for the class and what we could have done without. This is my poetry class. Pretty neat.
I have gotten too comfortable doing things at my apartment. Yea, I like to read and play music. I think its productive to hone my skills in literature (if I want to be a teacher) and music (something I just enjoy). Too much time alone can be detrimental though.
If anybody wants some delicious bread, just ask me and I will bring you a fresh loaf. To keep the starter fresh I have to make about three loafs a week and there is no way I can get through them all on my own. Don't be scared to ask, I would be so happy. It's really good bread!
I have a crush on Anne Sexton.
I'm reading her biography right now.

music: Clash
This is the most boring night ever...as of thirty minutes ago. No, I don't have ESPN so I won't be watching the Iron Bowl. Nobody is answering their phone and it is too cold outside to ride my bike for too long. I suppose the only choice I have is...
CRUCIAL BASS NIGHT!!!
Now until... Fate has chosen tonight, Iron Bowl night nonetheless, for me to do nothing but play bass all evening. I fight back bordom with fun by my lonesome. Yea!
And you know what else kicks ass? Bread. Yea, thats right, handmade artisan bread. You can keep that Sunbeam razamataz to yourself, I'll take the real stuff. Preservatives? No thank you! I like my bread hard after two days not any of that "soft" stuff.
Go Vols.

Joe Lally is coming to Bottletree but not until February. I would like to say he needs no introduction but for those of you who don't know he is the bassist for Fugazi. That is so far away! I'm going to go ahead and get my ticket though. There to Here was released last year and is just amazing. The bass grooves are like urgent but mellow at the same time. Its the perfect music to listen to while driving. That album is without a doubt the best thing Dischord has put out lately. Can't wait till the new one comes out next week.
I have been living D.H. Lawrence for the past month. I love it when I am really interested in things for school.
It is cold again, and for some reason that makes me want to listen to jazz. It happens every year, I will probably spend alot of cash at Charlemagne on records now. I got really pissed when I was working in the attic the other night and somebody said "I can't take this anymore," while I was listening to John Coltrane and Milt Jackson. I haven't been that mad in a while. I turned it up instead.
